Exploring the speleothem sulphur record

The sulphur biogeochemical cycle has perhaps been one of the most heavily modified nutrient cycles of the last century. Fossil fuel combustion has enhanced sulphur loading to the atmosphere, leaving an unmistakable legacy in the polar ice core records. However, such ice core records are distant from the source of pollution and do little to provide a regional perspective on sulphur pollution dynamics. Here, we explore the use of speleothems (cave stalagmites and stalactites) as regional archives of sulphur pollution. Many speleothems have now been shown to contain a sulphur record which depicts a peak in emissions status and subsequent decline following the introduction of legislation to reduce SOx emissions. Despite heavy modification of the atmospheric sulphur signal in the overlying soil and karst, sulphur isotopes have been used to attribute the sulphur to source and also to explore the mechanism of incorporation. Through stable isotopes, the speleothem sulphur archive is seen to be far more than just a record of anthropogenic sulphur pollution, encompassing also volcanic activity and changing climatic conditions.
